FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does Memories by Michelle do?
I help individuals and families preserve their stories through oral history interviews, memoir guidance, genealogy research and custom designed books. Whether I interview you personally or work from recordings, documents and photos you already have, my goal is to create a meaningful, lasting record of your life or a loved one’s life.

How do the collections differ?
Each collection offers a different way to tell a story:

  • The Story Keeper Collection focuses on capturing your life story through guided interviews.
  • The Roots Collection centers on genealogy research and family history.
  • The Life & Lineage blends oral history with genealogy for a full picture narrative.
  • The Milestone Collection celebrates important life events like love stories, anniversaries or graduations.
  • The Guided Keepsake Collection allows you to record stories yourself and turn them into a beautiful book.

How does the interview process work?
Interviews are usually 1-2 hours, done in person or through a virtual platform like Zoom or FaceTime. I guide you with thoughtful questions that help you remember important experiences, people and moments.

Can I record stories myself?
Yes. Through the Guided Keepsake Collection you can record a conversation and I will transcribe it, edit it and shape it into a beautifully written story. I will provide a list of questions that will help the interview.

Can you work with old photos, documents or family research?
Absolutely. I can use photos or materials you provide. If your genealogy research needs sorting or organizing, I can do that for an additional fee.

How do I get recordings and photos to you?
You can send digital files through email, Cloud storage (Google Drive or Dropbox), or bring physical items to me so I can scan them.

Do I need to know a lot about my family history to begin?
Not at all. I can start from what you know — even if it’s only a few names and dates and build the family tree from there. After our initial consultation I will do preliminary research so I know if there is enough information to make a book.

How long does the process take?
Most projects take 6-12 months depending on length, depth of research, and design needs. Smaller projects, like Guided Keepsake, may take as little as 3-6 months. You will also receive timeline updates throughout the process.

Will I get to review the story before it is finalized?
Yes. You’l have the opportunity to review the transcript, narrative and book design. Your feedback and corrections are also welcome.

How much do Collections cost?
Each project is unique, and pricing is based on the scope and care required to tell your story well. Considerations may include:

  • The number and length of interviews.
  • The depth of genealogical research involved.
  • The volume and condition of photographs, letters, and documents.
  • Transcription, writing and editing time.
  • Custom design and layout of the final book.
  • Overall complexity, timeline, and level of detail.

If you are hesitant to reach out because you’re unsure what you can afford, please don’t let that stop you. There are often ways to shape a project that still preserves what matters most.

What does the finished book look like?
I order from two publishing companies — Blurb and Artifact Uprising. I partner with them because they offer beautiful, high-quality books that can be ordered in small quantities.

Blurb books typically range from $75-$150. Artifact Uprising offers archival-quality books, usually ranging from $200-$700. You may also just order the PDF and publish on your own. We will discuss which format best fits your project in our initial consultation. Please note: book printing costs are separate and not included in any collection.

Is this only for older adults?
No. Every story has value. I work with people of all ages, from celebrating milestones to capturing love stories to documenting entire family histories.

Can you help after a loved one has passed?
Yes. Through the Tribute Collection, I work with family memories to create a memorable book based on interviews, photos, letters and shared stories.

Why should I do this now?
Because stories fade and memories slip away, moments that feel clear today may be forgotten tomorrow. Preserving them now ensures they’re captured while voices, detail and emotions are still alive.
